International Powerlifting Federation Joins World Sport for All as a Committee Member

World Sport for All is pleased to announce that the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) has joined the Federation as a new Committee Member. The appointment strengthens World Sport for All’s international network and brings the experience of a global strength-sport federation to its work promoting accessible, inclusive and lifelong participation in sport.

Powerlifting is a strength sport in which athletes perform three lifts: squatting, bench press and deadlift. Competitors’ best successful lifts are combined to determine their total, with athletes competing in categories including age and bodyweight.
Sports offer a clear, measurable challenge: participants can pursue personal progress as well as competition, at local, national and international levels.

“Powerlifting demonstrates how sport can bring people together around effort, personal development and shared achievement,” said Marco Tomasini, CEO of World Sport for All. “We are delighted to welcome the International Powerlifting Federation as a Committee Member. Its expertise will contribute to our work to make sports and physical activity more accessible to people and communities around the world.”

Powerlifting has relevance to Sport for All because participation can span a wide range of ages and levels of experience. The IPF describes competition opportunities for athletes from age 14 through master’s age categories and says that athletes may continue competing into older age.
With appropriate instruction, equipment and individual progression, strength training can offer a route into regular physical activity and help participants develop confidence and a sense of community. The appointment creates opportunities to explore how powerlifting can contribute to grassroots participation, inclusive programmes and lifelong engagement in sport.

Founded in 1972, the International Powerlifting Federation is the international governing body for powerlifting. It works with national federations and stages competitions around the world. The IPF is a founding member of the World Games Association, and powerlifting has been featured in every edition of The World Games since the event began in 1981. The Federation also highlights its anti-doping programme, age-group competitions and equal recognition for male and female athletes.

World Sport for All—also known as the Fédération Internationale du Sport pour Tous (FISpT)—is an international, non-profit federation dedicated to developing Sport for All in cooperation with its members. It promotes connections and international exchange among organizations and individuals working to expand access to sport and physical activity.
